About Dr Ralph Abraham

Dr Abraham is an experienced consultant physician with a reputation established with colleagues and patients, over more than 40 years and is full time in the private sector. He graduated from Merton College Oxford, was trained at the Middlesex Hospital, did a PhD in Biochemistry at Imperial College and had his clinical training at Kings College Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

He specialises in the fields of diabetes, lipids (cholesterol) and endocrinology but has over many years been able to use his clinical research in obesity to help patients with weight problems. Ralph has patients from all over the world, often as a tertiary referral in the fields of advanced or brittle diabetes and heart attack and stroke prevention.

He is particularly experienced in the management of Type 1 diabetes with closed loop hybrid technology pumps and pods and sensors and uses insulin sparing therapy in insulin requiring patients to improve control and wellbeing. He contributes, together with a first-class supportive team of diabetes nurse specialists and dietitians, to the excellent service at London Medical for type 1 diabetes.

While cognisant of guidelines, he is modern in his approach, putting his patient’s health needs first and including them always in decisions about their treatment. He achieves excellent results and patient satisfaction with the emphasis on education and support. The Diabetes Care Plans make outstanding comprehensive diabetes management affordable.

For type 2 diabetes, the emphasis is on weight management using GLP1 agonists such as Ozempic, Rybelsus and Mounjaro, tight glucose control with attention to blood pressure and LDL suppression.

Working at London Medical allows access to immediately available consultant expertise for eyes, feet, cardiology, arteries, kidney, nutrition, and podiatry – all in one clinic.

Dr Abraham also sees patients with familial hyperlipidaemia and lipid disorders. He has developed unique ways of monitoring atherosclerosis and the rate of progression of atheroma, with intensive treatment offered to patients who have familial hyperlipidaemia or evidence of past or high-risk future coronary artery disease. These include biochemical assessment using NMR technology (with total LDL and small LDL particle numbers, assessment of HDL size, oxidised LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein (a)) and with imaging (using quantitative carotid intima-media thickness, CT coronary calcium scoring and CT coronary angiogram). All risk factors, including smoking, hypertension and diabetes are optimised individually for each patient.

Dr Abraham advises industry and colleagues on the best standards of care and lectures on new treatments in diabetes. Ralph is an enthusiastic champion for the needs of people with diabetes of all ages, taking into account different cultures and food preferences.
