Professional profile
Dr Sufyan Hussain is a consultant Diabetes and Endocrine Physician at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London. In clinical practice, he is especially interested in helping people with:
- diabetes technology (e.g. continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps and hybrid closed-loop systems)
- the latest treatments for type 1 & 2 diabetes and weight management
- complications and mental health issues in diabetes
- thyroid disorders, Addison’s disease and polycystic ovary syndrome
- fasting and diabetes (e.g. Ramadan and intermittent fasting)
- exercising with diabetes
Having lived with type 1 diabetes himself for over 30 years, Dr Hussain combines his training and experience with a holistic and person-centred approach to improving the lives of people with diabetes and endocrine long-term conditions.
Dr Hussain is an active member of several professional organisations, including the International Diabetes Federation Europe (Board of Directors), the Diabetes Technology Network of the UK Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (committee member), and the NHS London Diabetes Strategic Clinical Network. He also serves on the UK Secretary of State for Transport’s Honorary Medical Advisory Panel on driving and diabetes.
Dr Hussain is experienced in all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology. He received his medical degree from the University of Cambridge. He completed his PhD at Imperial College London under Professor Sir Steve Bloom, a pioneer of new treatments such as GLP-1 and combination hormone therapies, that can control type 2 diabetes and weight without causing low blood sugar levels. He undertook his postgraduate training in diabetes and endocrinology at the renowned Imperial College rotation in London. Dr Hussain has active research and leadership roles in the specialty. He has published over 50 research papers and contributed to several medical textbooks and guidelines influencing care nationally and internationally.
Passions
Outside work, Dr Hussain loves spending time with his family, perfecting his tennis serve and long-distance cycling.
