We’re delighted to announce that the Omnipod 5 is available now at The London Diabetes Centre.

Let’s take a closer look at exactly what the Omnipod 5 can do, how it works and where you can get it from. Discover all you need to know about this innovative diabetes management system with The London Diabetes Centre.

What is the Omnipod 5 system?

The Omnipod 5 is a brand-new system that provides automated insulin delivery using transformative technology. The system itself is tubeless and a hybrid closed-loop system that is integrated with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system.

One of the great things about the Omnipod 5 is that this system can be used on anyone with type 1 diabetes who is over the age of two. This means that more people can safely manage their or their child’s diabetes with the use of this technology.

What is a hybrid closed-loop system?

Sometimes known as an ‘artificial pancreas’, a hybrid closed-loop system is a system that links up an insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). This system takes glucose readings from the CGM device and uses an algorithm to automatically adjust insulin delivery through the insulin pump — 24 hours a day.

How can the Omnipod 5 help me manage my diabetes?

The Omnipod 5 uses the Dexcom G6 CGM to automatically adjust your insulin delivery based on your needs at the time. It does this in response to the changes in your sensor glucose readings without any manual adjustment. This means that you can go about your daily life without worrying about taking insulin or continuously checking your glucose levels — the Omnipod 5 does it all for you. You will still need to work with your pump to get the best results, though. This means telling the system how many carbs you are eating and when so that it can deliver your mealtime insulin.

The Omnipod 5 is made up of three parts:

  • The Pod
  • The Controller
  • The Dexcom G6 CGM system

The Pod is a small device filled with insulin that you wear directly on your body with an adhesive.

The Controller helps you manage the system while monitoring its operations with wireless Bluetooth technology.

The Dexcom G6 CGM system is another small, wearable device that continuously monitors your glucose levels. The Pod communicates with the Dexcom G6 24 hours a day and automatically adjusts your insulin based on your real-time glucose levels.

These three parts all work harmoniously together to ensure you always get the insulin you need.
