Type 1 diabetes in children
Worried about your child's diabetes?
When your child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it can be difficult to know which way to turn. They will need a lifetime of expert care to maintain their health and prevent complications. Many parents are frightened for the future, but the specialist diabetic team at The London Diabetes Centre can help. Specialising in paediatric diabetes care, we are dedicated to helping children with diabetes, and their parents, learn how to manage their condition successfully and safeguard their health.
Individualised care plans
Diabetes is a condition that requires careful control to stay well and reduce long-term complications. The expert professionals at The London Diabetes Centre offer cutting-edge technologies and treatments for diabetes, to make it easier for children and parents to control sugar levels.
We develop individualised care plans for children with diabetes. As well as education these often include the latest continuous glucose monitors to reduce finger-prick testing and improve sugar monitoring. Pumps are often prescribed to provide more flexibility around meals, reduced risk of hypos and more stable blood glucose levels.
Many of the latest monitors can be monitored and downloaded remotely, so that parents can keep an eye on progress, for added reassurance.
Helping you and your child become diabetes experts
As a parent, you have a crucial role to play in helping your child learn to manage their diabetes and live a full and happy life. The London Diabetes Centre can help you and your child become diabetes experts. They will help you gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to successfully manage the condition.
The experienced diabetic team of highly skilled paediatric consultants, dieticians, clinical psychologists and diabetes specialist nurses are experienced in dealing with young people. They will help you understand how to monitor glucose levels, provide the nutrition your growing child needs and help them live well with diabetes.
School support
Starting or changing schools can be worrying for children and parents. The clinic offers individual school visits to support and educate the school team to maintain the individual care plan.
The specialists at The London Diabetes Centre are always on hand for help and guidance. Diabetes UK also runs a help-line for parents with advice about school and diabetes on 0345 123 2399.
Growing up and moving on
Adolescence can be a challenging time for young people with diabetes, and their parents. The London Diabetes Centre develops transitional care plans, to help children take increasing control of their condition and move towards adult care. The specialist multidisciplinary team understands that as the individual gets older their needs and preferences will change and are experts in supporting this process.
No one understands diabetes better than The London Diabetes Centre; which is why parents and children from all over the world come to the benefit from the first-class diabetes care.
